Summer Pockets Movie Set for August Release!

During the 7th anniversary livestream celebrating the beloved visual novel by Visual Arts/Key, it was officially announced that the Summer Pockets anime will be getting a compilation film. The movie is set to hit theaters across Japan on August 15.

That’s not all—Netflix will begin streaming the Summer Pockets TV anime on August 8. However, it’s still unclear whether the Netflix release will be available outside of Japan.

The Summer Pockets anime originally premiered on April 7 in Japan on Tokyo MX and BS11. International fans were able to watch it through Crunchyroll, which streamed the series as it aired.

What is Summer Pockets About?

For those unfamiliar, Summer Pockets is a visual novel that first launched in June 2018 for PC in Japan. It tells a heartfelt story set on a quiet island, focusing on one nostalgic and emotional summer. The game received an updated version called Summer Pockets REFLECTION BLUE in 2020, which added new story content and characters. This version has since been released on multiple platforms including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and mobile devices.

An English version of the game became available on Steam in February 2020, allowing international players to experience the story firsthand.

The anime and game come from a powerhouse team. Jun Maeda—known for hits like Clannad, Angel Beats!, and AIR—is behind the original concept and music. The character designs were brought to life by Na-Ga, Tsubasu Izumi, Fumuyun, and Nagayama, all of whom have previously worked on major Key projects.

There’s more for manga lovers too! A manga adaptation titled Summer Pockets – Summer Treasures began serialization online via Shueisha’s Tonari no Young Jump on May 30. A fun spinoff manga featuring Tsumugi called Summer Pockets Mugyu Days Tsumugi’s Stroll in the Island also launched earlier this year in Kadokawa’s Dengeki Moeoh magazine.
