Suicide Notes Placed on the Table Manga to Debut as Live-Action Film on January 31
Square Enix recently confirmed that Toutarou Minami’s popular manga Suicide Notes Laid on the Table (Isho, Kōkai.) is being adapted into a live-action film, set to hit theaters in Japan on January 31. Fans of the series are already buzzing with excitement over this news, especially since Tsutomu Hanabusa, known for his work on the live-action Tokyo Revengers and 3D Kanojo Real Girl, is directing the film. The script will be written by Osamu Suzuki, who has worked on projects like One Piece Film Z and Jungle Emperor Leo. With such an experienced team behind the adaptation, there's a lot of anticipation surrounding how the film will bring this dark and emotional story to life.
The main cast is star-studded, featuring members from well-known groups. Hokuto Yoshino from The Rampage (Exile Tribe) will take on the role of Hiiragi Ikenaga, while Ryūbi Miyase plays Seiichi Chikage. Other key cast members include Sara Shida as Kurumi Hatsukaichi, Minato Matsui from IMP. as Masato Akazaki, and Akari Takaishi as Rina Mikado. Fans will also see Miona Hori, formerly of Nogizaka46, in the role of Tsubaki Himeyama, a pivotal character whose mysterious suicide sets the story in motion. The supporting cast is equally impressive, featuring talents such as Shūgo Oshinari, Kaisei Kamimura, Ririka Kawashima, and more.
What makes this adaptation especially intriguing is how the film was teased before the title was officially revealed. Back in September, the project was hinted at, but it wasn't until October 10 that an "ultra-early teaser trailer" dropped, showing the 25 cast members without giving away the film's title. This slow reveal has only heightened anticipation among fans.
Story Overview
For those unfamiliar with the manga, Suicide Notes Laid on the Table tells the haunting story of a class of students at Kairei Private Middle School who receive a ranking system email at the start of the year, unsettling everyone. Tsubaki Himeyama, the number one ranked student, manages to bring peace to the class with her cheerful personality. However, tragedy strikes when she is found dead on campus, having apparently taken her own life. After her funeral, each classmate finds a suicide note addressed to them on their desks. The story unravels the hidden darkness within the class as the characters confront their secrets and guilt.
Minami first launched the manga in Gangan Joker in 2017, and Square Enix completed its run with the ninth and final volume in 2022. The manga is available in English on platforms like Comikey and Square Enix’s Manga UP!, allowing international fans to dive into this gripping story ahead of the film’s release.
Mark your calendars for January 31 to see this intense and emotional story come to life on the big screen!
