What Happened in Oshi no Ko?
The second season of Oshi no Ko aired in July 2024 across Tokyo MX and more than 29 other channels in Japan. Internationally, HIDIVE streamed the anime, including its English dub. Season 2 focused on the 2.5D stage play "Tokyo Blade," which was a major story arc in the manga.
The first season premiered in April 2023, featuring a 90-minute first episode. The anime quickly became a massive hit, even setting records on HIDIVE, where it became the #1 series launch in the platform’s history.
The Original Manga and Its Adaptations
Oshi no Ko is based on the manga written by Aka Akasaka (Kaguya-sama: Love is War) and illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari (Scum’s Wish). It began serialization in April 2020 in Weekly Young Jump and concluded on November 14, 2023, with 16 volumes. The manga was also released digitally in English on Shueisha’s MANGA Plus platform. Yen Press licensed the manga for an official English release.
The story follows Gorou, a doctor and idol fan, who unexpectedly gets reincarnated as the child of his favorite idol, Ai Hoshino. As he grows up, he realizes the harsh realities of the entertainment industry and seeks to uncover secrets from his past.
Live-Action and Stage Play Adaptations
Beyond anime and manga, Oshi no Ko has also expanded into live-action adaptations. A TV series premiered on Amazon Prime Video worldwide on November 28, 2023, followed by a live-action film in Japanese theaters on December 20, 2023.
Additionally, a stage play adaptation of the "2.5D Stage Play" arc ran in Osaka from December 26-29, 2023, bringing the intense drama of Tokyo Blade to life on stage.
With a new season, a global game release, and growing popularity, Oshi no Ko continues to be one of the most talked-about anime franchises today. Fans can look forward to more updates as we get closer to the 2026 release of Season 3!
