Mieruko-chan Horror Comedy Manga Set to Thrill Fans with Upcoming Live-Action Film Adaptation!
Kadokawa announced on Thursday that Mieruko-chan, the popular horror comedy manga by Tomoki Izumi, will be getting a live-action film adaptation. The film is set to release in early summer 2025. Nanoka Hara, known for her roles in Suzume and the live-action Oshi no Ko, will play the lead character Miko Yotsuya. Fans of the series can also check out an interview with Hara, which Kadokawa has started streaming to mark the announcement.
Directing and writing the film is Yoshihiro Nakamura, a seasoned filmmaker recognized for his work on Fish Story, A Boy, and His Samurai, Prophecy, and Mumon: The Land of Stealth. His involvement has raised anticipation among fans eager to see how he will translate the unique blend of horror and comedy from the manga onto the big screen.
Mieruko-chan Overview
For those unfamiliar with the story, it is the tale of Miko, a high school girl who suddenly starts seeing terrifying, grotesque monsters that no one else can see. Instead of confronting them or running away, Miko chooses to ignore these supernatural beings entirely, trying her best to keep her daily life normal despite the chilling creatures lurking around her.
The Mieruko-chan manga was launched by Izumi in November 2018 on Kadokawa's ComicWalker website, where it quickly became a hit. Since then, the series has garnered over 85 million views. Kadokawa published the 10th volume of the manga in Japan on February 22, 2023, and the series has more than three million copies in circulation. Meanwhile, Yen Press shipped the 9th volume in English on April 16, 2023, and the 10th volume is slated for release in April 2025.
The manga also inspired a successful anime adaptation in 2021, which was streamed with an English dub by Funimation as it aired. The anime brought Mieruko-chan to a wider audience, increasing the fanbase for this unique horror-comedy blend.
With the upcoming live-action adaptation, fans of Mieruko-chan have much to look forward to as they await this new interpretation of Miko's eerie yet comedic encounters with the supernatural.
