Hideo Kojima Confirms Death Stranding Anime Is in Development!
Hideo Kojima, the famous creator of Death Stranding, has officially confirmed that an anime adaptation of the game is now in the works. This news comes alongside a previously announced live-action movie that’s also being developed.
In a recent interview with Vogue Japan, Kojima opened up about the future of the Death Stranding universe. He believes that the lines between video games and movies are starting to blur, and he wants to take the story of Death Stranding beyond just games.
Kojima shared that he’s working closely with A24 – the well-known studio behind movies like Everything Everywhere All At Once and Midsommar – to create a live-action Death Stranding film. But he also revealed something new: a separate anime project is being developed as well.
This is the first time Kojima has officially confirmed the anime. While he did talk about anime as a possible direction for Death Stranding in a 2024 interview with Variety, that was more of a general plan. Now, it’s clear that an anime is indeed happening.
What To Expect From the Upcoming Death Stranding Anime?
Talking about the movie, Kojima said he doesn’t want it to be just another game adaptation. Instead of copying the story from the game, he wants to create a version that feels like real cinema—something that could even win awards at top film festivals like Cannes or Venice. He compared different kinds of game adaptations, such as The Last of Us, which stayed true to the original game, and The Super Mario Bros Movie, which was more for fans. But for Death Stranding, Kojima wants to explore new creative ground.
In addition to the anime and the film, Kojima also confirmed that a sequel to the original Death Stranding game is in development. He sees all of this—games, movies, anime, and more—as part of the second phase of building the Death Stranding universe.
So, fans of Death Stranding have a lot to look forward to: a sequel game, a live-action movie directed by A Quiet Place: Day One's Michael Sarnoski, and now, an anime series that will take the story even further.
