Goku and Vegeta Reunite in Stunning New Art by Dragon Ball Super Illustrator!
Dragon Ball Super might be on a break, but that hasn’t stopped its artist, Toyotaro, from giving fans something exciting. As the manga nears its 10th anniversary, Toyotaro has returned with a brand-new illustration showing Goku and Vegeta teaming up in an epic pose. The special artwork celebrates the 7th anniversary of the Dragon Ball Legends mobile game.
The new illustration features Goku in his Ultra Instinct form and Vegeta in his Super Saiyan Blue Evolution form. Both characters look battle-worn, with ripped clothes and serious expressions, ready to face a powerful enemy. Toyotaro designed the image to show the two Saiyans as strong individuals, but also as a powerful team when seen together. He explained that he wanted their poses to be dynamic and filled with energy, so he faced them towards the viewer and paid close attention to their facial expressions and clothes.
Although Toyotaro didn’t have a specific enemy in mind while drawing the art, he imagined the setting to be the Tournament of Power. He guessed they were likely fighting Jiren, based on how intense and worn-out they looked after a long battle. To make the art more interesting, Toyotaro didn’t make the characters stand in a perfectly symmetrical pose. Instead, he staggered their fists and overlapped parts of their bodies to create depth and action.
This was Toyotaro’s first time drawing Vegeta in his Super Saiyan Blue Evolution form, which only exists in the anime, not the manga. Because of that, he paid extra attention to Vegeta’s hairstyle and expression to keep it accurate for fans who love the anime version.
Dragon Ball Super has been on hiatus since Spring, following the passing of the franchise’s creator, Akira Toriyama. The manga paused after completing its adaptation of the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie, and there's been no official word on when or if it will return.
Still, Toyotaro’s new art shows his deep love for the characters and his dedication to the series. While fans continue to wait for news about the manga’s return, this new Goku and Vegeta artwork gives them something to enjoy and hope for in the future.
