Chainsaw Man’s Reze Arc Will Be Different – Director Confirms BIG Changes
Chainsaw Man is finally coming back — but not as a Season 2. Instead, MAPPA is releasing a full movie based on one of the manga’s most popular storylines: the Reze Arc. This movie will bring back Denji, along with the explosive and emotional chaos of his encounter with Reze, a mysterious girl who turns out to be the deadly Bomb Devil.
However, fans expecting a perfect, page-by-page adaptation of the manga might be in for a surprise.
At Anime Expo 2025, MAPPA’s CEO Manabu Otsuka shared that the Reze Arc movie will include major changes to the original manga. He explained that even though they tried to stay true to the source, some things had to be toned down—specifically the violence and sexual content. “There are strict film rating rules,” Otsuka said. “We want as many people to see it as possible, but there are things we have to adjust for that to happen.”
This news is a bit disappointing for hardcore fans. The Reze Arc is known not just for its intense action scenes between Denji and Reze, but also for the deeper emotional and physical tension between Denji, Reze, and Makima. Many fans love these parts of the story, and the fact that they’re being dialed back has stirred mixed reactions online.
Interestingly, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc will still be rated R — MAPPA’s first film with this rating. So even with changes, it seems like the movie will still push boundaries and deliver the edgy, gritty tone fans expect from the series.
Another major update is the change in director. Season 1 director Ryū Nakayama has been replaced by Tatsuya Yoshihara. Many viewers criticized Season 1 for being visually too “muted,” losing the punch of Fujimoto’s original art. The new trailer, though, shows a bolder and more vibrant visual style — a sign that MAPPA is listening to feedback.
The Reze Arc movie premieres in Japan on September 19, and hits U.S. theaters on October 29. While the film may not include everything from the manga, it’s still a big moment for Chainsaw Man fans — a return to Denji’s wild, heartbreaking, and bloody world.
